In order to prepare for this examination (#301), students should have a working knowledge of Texas Minimum Jail Standards. The most current copy of standards can be viewed via the link listed at the bottom of this page. Questions on the exam covering minimum jail standards will cover multiple chapters. However, students should concentrate on the following chapters of Texas Minimum Jail Standards: 253, 263, 265, 267, 269, 271, 273, 275, 277, 279, 281, 283, 285, 287, 289, 291 and 297.
Students should also familiarize themselves with the Local Government Code 351 and Government Code 511 as these codes relate to the minimum jail standards. Next, questions on the exam relating to TCOLE will be found TAC Title 37, Part 7, Chapter 217 & 218 TCOLE Rules. Finally, a block of questions that focus on relevant case law, legal definitions and cases useful to jail administration can be found in the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) Publication – “Jails and the Constitution, An Overview”. The link to this book, for testing purposes, is located below.
Students that familiarize themselves with listed areas of study in this course description and have access to the material for exam should be well prepared to sit for the examination. Students must successfully complete this exam with a score of 100%. This online exam may be taken multiple times to achieve a passing score. The question: The ____ is the keeper of the jail, should have been "Sheriff" however, the test marked it wrong. I didn't get the question again on the next round so it turned out to be a non-issue. Those that do get the question will have issues and have to take the 75 question test again.

The question regarding, "The commission may only provide a grant to a county for capital improvements to a county jail with a capacity of not more than ____ prisoners". Should of been 288 but it's not listed in the answer choices. The correct answer choice is 96. Maybe some of the information is out dated??? Overall, it's great information for our Jail Administrators.
